of Nebraska newspapers for obituaries, anniversaries, wedding pictures,
and other various articles you ancestor may have appeared in.
• Local and County Histories as well as family histories in the library.
• Naturalization records
• City Directories
• Livestock brand recordings
• School census records
• Census records
• Native American census records
• Cemetery and Mortuary records
• Church records
• State Penitentiary records
• Various libraries
These are a few of many kinds of records each individual research may lead us to. Each family is somewhat unique and at times we have to think ‘outside the box’ to be successful in our research for you.
County Court: Adoptions,
criminal and civil cases, probate, conservator, guardianships
• Adoptions are closed in Nebraska as is the original birth certificate
• Probate could be both testate and intestate, indexed
• Conservator and Guardianships are also indexed
District Court: Naturalizations, Divorce, civil
and criminal cases
• Naturalizations is a federal issue however were handled by the District
Court until..
• The proceedings or detail of the divorce can be obtained from this
court.
County Clerk:Marriage records, filings, minutes
of the commissioners
Marriage records used to be handled by County Court but several years
Ago were transferred to the Clerk. The smaller courts can give You a
copy of the application for license which has the most Genealogy info
such as names of parents including the mothers’ Of the bride and groom
maiden names, the bride and grooms age, Place of birth, residence. The
marriage certificate which can be obtained at the vital records Would
tell you the witnesses which may be relatives and a Church if they were
married by a clergyman. This may Lead to other church records Minutes
of the Commissioners may tell you who was paid for various Work or supplies
and how much. They also will tell you who may Have had financial assistance
from the county and if a grave was Dug for someone indigent, especially
the poor farm. Filings: In order to make sure a record was secure it
could be filed with Clerk. An example would be the many discharge papers
that at One time could be filed with the Clerk.
